DESCRIPTION: “Mount Whitney. This majestic mountain peak, its eastern slopes located in the INYO National Forest and its western slopes located in Sequoia National Park, is the highest point in the United States proper. It was named in honor of J.D. Whitney, leader of an early California Geological Survey party. The first ascent of Mt. Whitney was made in 1873 by A.H. Johnson, C.D. Begole, and John Lucas. The summit slopes slightly westward and has an area of approximately four acres. Though fairly well hidden by lesser peaks, Whitney may be seen from U.S. highway 6-395, near Lone Pine…”
