CASCADE FALLS. YOSEMITE, CALIFORNIA.

Description

An uncommon postcard showing “Cascade Falls, Yosemite, Cal.” Published for the George C. Salch Company, San Francisco, by M. Rieder (#5294). Made in Germany. Mailed by I can’t read the year. Blurb on the back begins “Cascade Falls are near the gate of the valley, not far from the boundary of Yosemite Park.” (See scans of front and back.)
BACKGROUND: Cascade Falls (also known as The Cascades) starts off as a series of tumbling waterfalls and cascades through a dense forest in the Western Yosemite High Country. However, as it gains momentum and combines with Tamarack Creek just below the Big Oak Flat Road, it plunges as an impressive 500 foot waterfall before feeding the Merced River. In the park’s early years, visitors had to enter by stagecoach from Coulterville.
Thus, the falls was probably better known back then than now. The route passed before Cascade Falls, which offered visitors a cool and refreshing respite from the typically hot and dusty approach.
BACKGROUND: Michael Rieder (1868-1949) printed and published view-cards in Los Angeles of the West and of Native Americans. His cards were printed in Germany except those contracted out to Edward H. Mitchell in San Francisco and other publishers like George Salch. Michael Rieder (credited on cards as “M. Rieder”) was born in Pennsylvania on April 28, 1868 and died in Los Angeles County on June 4, 1949. He and his wife, Mattie, are buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California.
