    The Rio Grande has cut Santa Elena Canyon through Mesa De Anguila, an uplifted block of hard limestone. Heavily burdened with sand and mud, the river continues to scour and rasp away at the rock. The high, sheer walls seem to overhang the winding river. It is possible to go into Santa Elena Canyon on foot, to sense its awesome immensity, to feel its solitude.
